(In both senses of the word)
Okay is that the real issue with software patents? Patents
in other fields seem to be required to be a patent on a
specific solution, whereas software patents often appear to
be a patent on the (recognition of) a problem. After which
others seem to be disallowed from attempting to solve that
problem in other ways and basically have to pretend that
problem doesn't exist.
Seems often something like that in a practical sense, even
if not in a strictly legal sense.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

BBC This disgusts
me. Some hardware patents may be justifiable, but I have serious doubts about
this one, which as implemented must really be software. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

From an FSFE
announcement on 2012-11-20:
Yesterday the German Ministry of
the Interior published a white paper about "Trusted Computing" and "Secure
Boot". The white paper says that "device owners must be in complete control of
(able to manage and monitor) all the trusted computing security systems of their
devices." This has been one of FSFE's key demands from the beginning. The
document continues that "delegating this control to third parties requires
conscious and informed consent by the device owner".
Germany seems
to be awake. I wonder how this will play out on ARM machines where MS wanted
UEFI to be enforced.

he Pi upgrade is just my interpretation of what it might be used for, and I
don't see why kids should not have a Pi one year and a slightly bigger thing the
next. It is slightly more expensive, but still cheap enough for most people in
the developed world. I first read about it on The H, along with some other
"interesting" things. Not so sure about Sinclair BASIC for the Pi.... [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

An anti-piracy company has found itself in the middle of a huge
controversy. CIAPC, the company that had The Pirate Bay blocked by ISPs in
Finland, tracked an alleged file-sharer and demanded a cash settlement. However,
the Internet account holder refused to pay which escalated things to an
unprecedented level. In response, this week police raided the home of the
9-year-old suspect and confiscated her Winnie the Pooh
laptop.
[...]
CIAPC confirmed that the case against the 9-year-old is
only the latest in a line of attempted settlements. Last fall a total of 28
Internet account holders settled with CIAPC, but of course we haven’t heard of
the cases due to the confidentiality agreements recipients are required to
sign.

The case was prompted by a mother who left Canada when she was seven months
pregnant.
After the baby was born in California, the father started custody proceedings in
Ontario. He said he had believed she would be coming back to the province to
raise the child.
Initially, Ontario's Superior Court agreed the custody dispute should be heard
in the province, saying what the mother had done was tantamount to kidnapping.
The Ontario Court of Appeal quashed that ruling, finding California courts
should decide the custody issues — something the Supreme Court of Canada
decision now lets stand.
