...not clear to me. I don't know the whole story, but if
you trust Wikipedia, the isomers interconvert in-vivo, so
even pure mixtures would probably cause birth defects. My
understanding is that they didn't test pregnant women
because they were pretty sure the placental barrier meant
that most drugs couldn't cause birth defects. Usage is
currently generally prohibited even in effective
applications because of the difficulty of preventing
pregnant women from taking the drug.
Nowadays, we spend billions testing pregnant rats and dicing
their fetuses. It'd probably be cheaper to just say...
'Not tested in pregnant women...don't use it. Use serious
birth control if you're taking this. Or, if you do have
trouble, don't sue us.'
And, really, if a 2x uptick in cardiovascular events
outweighs the additional benefits of a cancer drug...maybe
the drug just isn't worth it.
