First, note the self-reply where I report the results of contact-them-directly.
Second, Dell's business model is build-to-order. Of course they want to sell as
much stuff as possible, don't we all? But from jump street they've prided
themselves on building and shipping the machines after an order is placed,
relying on just-in-time parts inventory and corresponding savings.
So Dell having in place a sophisticated logistics system raises the bar of my
expectations over (say) HP, which makes little pretense of customization, sells
vast SKU's through big box stores, and understandably doesn't want to cope with
informed consumers (at least directly).
[That said, HP's support for Linux printer drivers is surprisingly good, just to
give credit-where-due.]
