What is needed here is a "Xerox PARC" to give the development of the
desktop a push forward.
Neither MS, Canonical with Unity or the Gnome devs. seem to have a clear path
forward. It seems to me that they are all throwing stuff at the wall and
looking to see what sticks.
In the mean time users are voting with their feet. See the rise and rise of
Linux Mint with Cinnamon and MATE.
Can squaring the circle of a UI to fit PCs, mobile phones and tablets be done?
Probably, but I do question whether that's the direction we should be going in.
Horses for courses and all that.
Finally, what would have happened if the current patent nonsense had been about
when PARC developed the WIMP interface, lots of patents in there I reckon, but
