Tolkin pretty much copied it.

The "other PJ" - Peter Jackson - started making a Hobbit
movie, decided it would take him two films to do it; later
decided it would expand to three. Early reports state
that the first film includes a great deal of material not
present in the book the Hobbit - for instance, background
history about the dwarfish kingdom prior to the arrival of
Smaug.
At least, it wasn't in the main storyline of the Hobbit
book. It may have been mentioned in an appendix, or in one
of his other books. Once upon a time I read all the Tolkien
ever published, but now I can't remember which story was
told where.
Ahh - of course this info can be found online. It seems
that much of the immediate background to the Hobbit story
was published (posthumously) in the Unfinished Tales
collection - which reportedly was not included among the
rights sold for the film. But from the description of the
Hobbit film so far, I'm not sure those scenes are in the
film; the film may stick to earlier history of Erebor (which
would be in an appendix to LOTR, and therefore included in
the movie deal).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
