"The main reason for opposing a unified power plug was there are 12 million
households full of voters who would not be happy at being told to rewire their
homes!"
I know about the ring topology in the UK (30 AMPS on every cable!). But there
were options to adapt the PLUGS without rewiring the homes (there always are).
However, protecting domestic suppliers from import took priority.

You seem to have convienently forgotten that when the 13amp system was
introduced houses were wired with three round pin sockets for 3/5/15 amp plugs
(the max amperage being set by the size of the pins, and hence plug) & had
to be rewired for the13 amp plug/sockets. They were also socket fused
(occasionally).
The 15 amp round pin plug & sockets are still in use in theatres.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
