I'll stick to Python and Tkinter. I can do range checking without the feeling
that a lawyer is looking over my shoulder.
The Raspberry Pi plus the Gertboard is looking more and more interesting. The
Atmel Arduino on board means that one can program time critical stuff on the
Atmel and drive it from Python on the RasPi. I see that Element 14 have a
pre-built Gertboard on the stocks.
As a less powerful alternative, it is possible to drive the pins on an FTDI (USB
to Serial/data port) module using Python or C on the RasPi. I think I paid about
£12.50 for mine.
When I say 'it is possible', it is possible for me and not some coding and metal
bashing genius. I have flashed the LEDs on my Gertboard using Python. What is
more worrying, I have downloaded the source code files to find out how it is
done.
With so much open and free hardware and software all interoperable, it does not
make sense to struggle to do the same with Java, even if it had been open and
free.
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Broken-chair New Year, Tiger99.
