There are studies out there that show access to firearms massively
increases the suicide rates. Well beyond anything required for it to be a
statistical anomaly. This is believed to be simply because there is a
quick and easy way out that is available when they happen to hit a real
low. Yes, there is an underlying issue and that needs treating, something
apparently not easy to get in the US unless you happen to have the right
insurance. However, a lack of guns in the house buys time for people to
get that treatment.
The numbers also clearly show that the US has a serious problem with
firearm related deaths. If the guns aren't the problem then I'm curious to
hear what you believe is the underlying issue driving these numbers up.
The NRA advocates treating a symptom, but does not posit an alternative
cause. Find and treat the actual cause and I have no issue with guns
being readily available.
Additionally as far as I'm aware many of the guns used in these tragedies
were legally owned is there any evidence that they would have got hold
of illegal weapons to perform these attacks? Stating that they'd just have
done it with knives is a poor comparison, to kill efficiently with a knife
requires more training than it does with a gun. It also requires you to get
a lot closer. So unarmed people have a chance to defend themselves
rather than almost none.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
