I would not think somebody
committing suicide is usually making
a rational decision. So they are
not pondering success rate of one
method vs another. It is whatever
Expedient.
I think the following is relevant.
Given the same country (so no public
policy difference in how we treat
mental illness and other social
problems), if the suicide rate of
people (or in households) who own a
gun is 5 times higher than those who
don't, then there is something
detrimental about having the gun:
either having the gun facilitates
suicide, or some theory of self
selection where people with
propensity to commit suicide are
more predisposed to buy guns. I
think the former is a more realistic
explanation. Either way, it makes
the issue a candidate for public
