Currently in the UK, I have no right to rip the CDs I have paid for, and that
appears about to change. One of the first things I did on moving out to the
USA was to rip my CD collection, as it is far more convenient and covered by
local law. I have never been too sure about my ability to bring my laptop back
to the UK with that material intact though.
Does this change mean that the UK consumer will now have the rights to
similarly rip their DVD collections, something I still cannot do in the USA?
If this is the case, and I were to travel to the UK and rip my DVD collection
there, would it be legal to bring those ripped images back to USA, where IIUC I
am allowed my back-up images, simply not allowed the circumvent the DMCA
locks on the disk. If I circumvent on disks I own in a different jurisdiction
where the ripping is legal, can I bring those backups I am allowed under fair
use back into the country?
Understood that any advice given here is not legal advice, just interesting
comments from an unusually well informed readership![ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
