I think that Microsoft habitually mistakes "new and different" for "innovative".
Up until now however, they've mostly inflicted their unique brand of innovation
on new products - which mostly flop and good riddance. With Windows 8
however
they are using it for their single most important product, without
which
nothing else they do matters a whit. If nobody uses Windows, there is
no reason
for Microsoft to exist.
Well, except for xbox, possibly the only new
product they got halfway right - by
basically copying every other successful
console vendor. Then they cheaped
out on the hardware...
Surface is of
course the major influence on Windows 8 and suffers from the
same malady. It's
a bad laptop, a bad tablet and doesn't really bring anything
new to the table
