With all due respect, I have to disagree. If there is any way we can reduce the
availability of these killing devices, we should seek that. The supposed
benefit of high performance killing device to a private individual must not
outweigh the danger that their easy accessibility poses to the public at large.
What I think you are missing is how easy it is to pull a trigger and the
outsized power that puts into the hands of one individual. Having gone through
Ordnance officer's school, I have a real appreciation for the destructive power
of automatic weapons. As a parent, I wouldn't want such weapons with 100 miles
of any school.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

If all you do is put armed guards in schools you are not going to solve
anything. By the time
the guards get to the scene, the damage will be done. To turn your question
around, how
many dead kids are acceptable?
Take a step back. What does it say about a society when 6 year olds need armed
security
guards? Does that sound like a civilised country that is headed in the right
direction? Do you
really want a shootout over the heads of 6 year olds?
Your point about other weapons is valid, but goes to the 'psyche' issue I was
hoping to stay
away from. To put it delicately, if Americans have access to firearms, they have
a greater
propensity to use them than those in other countries like Switzerland. For this
reason, the
legal changes you need must go further than that required in other countries. We
got away
with banning semi-automatic weapons to put an end to this sort of carnage. I
doubt that
would be sufficient for you.
To answer your question of how many dead kids are acceptable, my answer is none.
You
just have to do whatever is necessary to make that happen. You have to
understand that
your so called right to bear arms goes hand in hand with having to live with
events like this.
What is more important?
If you change nothing, nothing will change. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
