As human beings, we tend to laugh at what makes us afraid. I would suggest
there is a serious side to the statistic.
Over one's lifetime, one is quite
likely to encounter or experience any number of events that require counseling
by a qualified professional.
- Death of a parent, child, spouse or
friend
- Direct emotional trauma from job loss, job stress, relationship
issues, divorce, or abuse
- Indirect emotional trauma from current events
(Sandy Hook, et al)
- Other trauma, such as experiences in
war
- Dealing with addictions, both one's own and those close to
you
Issues such as depression affect many people, and are not
something that can be dealt with easily on one's own.
Jokes about mental
illness remind me of the Mel Brooks quote: "Tragedy is when I cut my finger.
Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
