The first IBM PC was 4.77 kHz. CP/M computers were already
up
to 8 kHz by then.
You could still tell what speed your processor was by taking
the case off, holding a radio up to it tuned to FM, and
spinning the dial until you got interference, then inverting
the station number for the kHz that it was running. I
sometimes wonder what band you would have to use today, and
if I could afford the set that would detect the processor
interference.
Then there was the high-performance computer company called
MIPS - for Millions of Instructions Per Second.
