They still don't have it all. Neither do I.
At all points along the transmission the signal is altered by the environment.
The availability of dopamine determines how the signal is passed to the next
neuron... and that is altered by the environment of connection and the state of
both neurons.
Just take a swig of a good bourbon to see a change in transmission. The
environment changed - which is an unlisted input to the neuron.
All of the studies so far attempt to understand the ideal neuron. They don't yet
(even after 40 years) understand enough to be able to emulate a mouse brain
(though I believe they managed an ant).
Only recently has an electronic device been developed (the memristor) that
appears to have some of the characteristics of neuron transmission. One
difference though - a neuron gets "tired" if is fired too rapidly, and
then quits transmitting entirely (another analog effect).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
