Agreed. They don't want to hear that the boat is at the bottom of the ocean,
they want to discuss designs for a better bucket chain.
I'm sure there are better short (and less godwin-y) metaphors, so pile in if you
have one.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

You cannot violate Godwin's law by exhibiting the behaviour
that it predicts.
It doesn't say that you shouldn't make such analogies. It
says that someone probably will.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

And I suppose this is political, which may result in it being removed.
I really don't want to sound like an alarmist, but this is exactly the same
issue as slavery. (And I am not advocating robots' rights, here, I'm advocating
human rights.)
It's just no longer as clear as white and black (and other "colors").
Money is and was the division point, and patents on ideas are a prime tool for
the side that says money should be equal to social and political power.
Current software patents allow verbal descriptions of machines implemented in
software. Verbal descriptions are necessarily abstract, and that is part of why
the recent slippery-slope descent into allowing process patents has not yet been
examined.
I guess I sound like an alarmist, but Godwin's law only applies when it is not
applicable. The danger here is very real. And it is the same question as
slavery.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
