The idea of paying twice for academic knowledge that is paid for either through
tax dollars by the commonwealth or via private donations to the university is a
problem.
These "journals" and their for profit model that encourages the
commercial owners of the "publication" to increase their subscription
and on-line revenue only serves the owners of the journals -- little revenue is
spent on the academics or their review panels.
The net result is slower advancement of knowledge -- so all of the human
community looses so that the owners of the journals can benefit.
Poor Aaron Schwartz. He was right.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
