I'm fighting the flu - I really should avoid saying much of anything while in
this state.
I mis-read your duoply to refer to the "duoply of Linux on
the desktop and smartphone" rather then the "duopoly of MS and Apple".

If you want to buy a smart phone, you have a choice:
- Apple iPhone
running iOS
- Android Phone (many different makes + can change firmware
yourself)
- Windows Phone (several makes) running WM8
- Blackberry
Phone running RIM
- Others...
If you want to buy a tablet
computer then you have a similar choice. If you want to buy a desktop PC then
you can choose either:
- A PC running Windows (many makes but only one
set of software)
- A very expensive Apple Appliance (the only thing than
CAN legally run OS/X)
It is extremely difficult to buy a PC WITHOUT
it being preloaded with Windows. FOSS is a massive threat to proprietary
software especially to both Microsoft and Apple which is why they do not attack
each other these days but both attack open source software (especially Android
which is very successful). Luckily the era of the desktop PC is coming to an
end and hopefully an end to the WinTel monopoly.
That is what I mean by
a duopoly - the unspoken partnership between Microsoft and
Apple.
--- Support Software Freedom - use GPL licenced software
like Linux and LibreOffice instead of proprietary software like Microsoft
Windows/Office or Apple OS/X [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
