OP's point is there's nothing new in that complexity. All smartphone
makers have done is follow the trend of miniaturisation, and pack
all that stuff into the handheld box using software to replace the
bunch of interconnect cables you used to have in three shoulder bags.
Apple were arguably the first to market with a device that did
the packaging of this complexity well enough to create some hype.

About 18 years ago I noticed how much cheaper the total value for invidividual
components for computers were than to buy the finished product. Friends and
relatives marvelled at how wonderfully clever I must be when I built computers
for them. I tried to dispel that myth by telling them that it's not too
dissimilar to Lego or Meccano and showing them just how easy it was.
Smartphones have the same sort of complexity... they're just smaller.
