Mentally ill != crazy
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, January 22 2013 @ 05:01 AM EST

I don't agree that mentally ill is a euphemism for crazy, though there
is plenty of overlap.

I have enough second-hand experience of the illness known as 'depression' to
know that it is not the same as the state of mind called 'being depressed',
although the two can be related. The former can arise independently of any
external triggers, and does not go away just because circumstances change. Thus
the classification as a 'mental illness' is accurate (in my non-medical opinion
at least), but I wouldn't describe the sufferer as crazy.

I've no idea if/how this applied to Swartz, just wanted to stick my oar
in on the above subject. I do agree the situation he campaigned against is a
depressing one, as is the way he was treated. Also depressingly, he was not the
first to die from willful bureaucracy.

Swartz wasn't mentally ill - just affected.

The pressures on him were great.

However, it is the same with us all. Here, a professor
claims that the rate of teen suicides increased due to
his findings:

However, there is no difference (cell-wise) with teens, or
those in there 20's, 30's, etc...

Here is his suggestion about the way to fix the problem
(part of it anyway):
