Better go with SFTP or SCP, as standard FTP leaves your ID & password wide
open to eavesdroppers. Of course with those secure methods, you can even skip
passwords, in favour of pub/ic/private keys.
I often use the KDE "fish" method. I just open the browser to my home
and I'm connected. Since it uses SSH, it's encrypted and I only have to allow
SSH through my firewall.
As for the rest of your comment, you are correct, in that VoIP and other
services over SIP only require a server to set up the call and then drop off, as
the call can be handled entirely between the two end devices. Of course, IPv6
is necessary to provide sufficient real world addresses.

Except you
don't if you're a home user, do you? You have a dynamic address. And even if you
did get a static address (at additional expense), who is going to know what it
is? And even if you got a static address, and everyone you want to talk to had
one, and you all wrote all the addresses down on a piece of paper, you still
wouldn't have a practical service because the telemarketers and spammers would
be sending you thousands of recorded VOIP messages per day that you would have
to answer and respond to one by one.
A usable service that works with
the Internet as it exists today needs some basic server infrastructure to tell
the caller what the callee's current dynamic IP address is (and visa versa),
verify the identities of each (to filter out telemarketers and VOIP spammers),
provide call status, call waiting, voice mail that works when your computer is
turned off, etc. That's why you need something more than just dynamic DNS.
So, the real question is going to be, who runs this?
Facebook/Google/Microsoft, or will it be an open system?
