I suspect that a goodly portion of that 7 billion is for the patent lawyers.
It's how they get patents.

$7B is a lot of money by any standard. I doubt MS has many employees engaged in
'pure' research. Most of this figure must be 'development' expenses, which can
be anyone working on any project, excluding tech support and marketing. As far
as 'new' projects, well, look around. If any new tech hits the market, MS will
follow. Is there any technology out there that they haven't copied? Also, the
charts only go to 2008. Ancient history. 10K reports seem rather useless.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

...to be fair...Xerox had a pretty mixed record in terms of
translating actually innovative stuff into actual revenue.
