And that's why I always reccomend turning any "Automatic Update"
feature off. As hard and as fast as you can.
They're one of the biggest security risks in most software today, as they train
people that their software suddelnly working differently to what it used to do
for no reason is normal (or they train you that hitting "download and run

In the EU at least, they would be in for a world of hurt.
If it happens by accident, then their Ts & Cs might well protect them. If
they did it by design, well, I don't know how many computer cracking laws they
would be breaking.
But Sony got away with the root-kit, maybe they'd bank on getting away with it
too ...
