My sympathies. I have not touched anything by them for more than 20 years.

Need a country-specific SIM. At least those that are quad-
band (I would have to check, but I suspect most are).
Actually, you can purchase their Global Roaming Plan, but
that's much more expensive than grabbing a native SIM.

Most phones can be unlocked without the co-operation of the carrier. Doing that
is perfectly legal in all free countries, only in totalitarian states do
bureaucracies prevent you using what you own as you wish :)
