And that's speaking from the perspective of someone without
dependents.
If you're kid is ill, having leave time to take care of that
kid is simply the humane thing to do.
Of course, proper fairness should
apply as well. If the "with dependents" gets "14 days total sick time including
'family care days'" as paid, then I myself should also qualify for "14 days
total sick time". I wouldn't use them - I average 1.5 sick days each year for
the last 15 years - but it would be fair if they were available for
use.
Personally... I'd love a system where it was "away" days instead.
Fo example, instead of 20 vacation days + 10 sick days, you had a total of 30
"away" days. And you could carry a full 1 year "away" over to the next year.
Policy being that you should always allow yourself a minimum of "x days" for
potential illness.
:) I'd love being able to carry my un-used sick days
into the next year and use them as vacation days.
I don't know of any
company that actually does that kind of thing though. And I certainly have no
idea what the cost impacts to the business would be such as the situation that
currently the sick days aren't guaranteed to be "spent" but under such an "away"
system, it would be a definite cost to the company.
But it would be great
:)
