I fear it is simpler than that. The BBC do not own the copyright on
everything that they broadcast, but use it under license. They know that
the terms of their licenses are good for UK viewing, and in many cases
known to not cover international audiences. It is generally simpler to
restrict viewing of all content to UK audiences.
As a bonus, this also sidesteps the question of showing content for free to
international viewers that was paid for by UK license fees - in principle
everyone. Iewing in the UK should have a paid up license. When I resided
in the UK I had no TV and therefore paid no license. This did not stop the
collectors chasing me, so following the cautious principle I actively avoided
accidentally viewing iPlayer content. If I understand correctly, it would be
legitimate to watch catch-up content, but not the live stream.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
