Here's
Guido's paper from 1993, "Python for Unix/C Programmers".
BibTeX:
@INPROCEEDINGS{An93pythonfor,
author = {Ss Um An and
Guido Van Rossum},
title = {Python for Unix/C Programmers Copyright 1993
Guido van Rossum 1},
booktitle = {Proc. of the NLUUG
najaarsconferentie. Dutch UNIX users group},
year = {1993}
So it was a conference. The abstract:
Python is an interpreted,
object-oriented language suitable for many purposes. It has a clear, intuitive
syntax, powerful high-level data structures, and a flexible dynamic type system.
Python can be used interactively, in stand-alone scripts, for large programs, or
as an extension language for existing applications. The language runs on UNIX,
Macintosh, and DOS machines. Source and documentation are available by anonymous
ftp. Python is easily extensible through modules written in C or C++, and can
also be embedded in applications as a library. Existing extensions provide
access to most standard UNIX library functions and system calls (including
processes management, socket and ioctl operations), as well as to large packages
like X11/Motif. There are also a number of system-specific extensions, e.g. to
interface to the Sun and SGI audio hardware. A large library of standard modules
written in Python also exists.... [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The first edition of O'Reilly's 'Learning Python' was published in late 1998 and
the copyright notice is 1999.
The flyleaf says that 'Learning Python, the image of a wood rat, and related
trade dress are trademarks of O'Reilly Media, Inc.'
As well as French and German offices, an English office is listed in the flyleaf
at Farnborough.
O'Reilly Media are still there at,
Gostrey House
Union Road
Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7PT
UK
It is my understanding that, as the UK and EU are signatory to the Berne
Convention, the copyright (and possibly the trade dress and trade marks) applies
throughout the EU and specifically in the UK.

The Python foundation is not in the business of providing ANY of the services
that PYTHON is trying to register a trademark for. You'll very often find the
same name trademarked in different classes .. because, simply, there are far
more businesses than there are unique names.
Allowing you to register a trademark for a particular set if use classes is the
way the system allows for the disparity of numbers.
WHY is python.org complaining? the applicatn does not appear to be claiming
rights that would affect python.org, unless of course, they are thinking of
leaving language development and getting into hosting and shared servers?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

If you pursue a trademark and it ends up in court ... and you lose, you end up
paying costs.
This company can probably get it on servers, web hosting etc, but will fail on
software, lose the argument and end up paying Python.orgs costs .. they shoudl
drop it.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
