It's not a free market. It's a locked down extortion racket.
The phone on the table I got n Indonesia (probably paid more than necessary to
ensure compatibility but still less than the unlocking fee from Telstra in .au)
took it back to Australia and got a SIM card for a couple of bucks and bought
some credit for calls and messages. Now I'm back in Indonesia with the same
phone and my sponsor has a deal with one of the carriers and i just put their
SIM in and away I went.
Oh; and since the house we live in doesn't have copper wires or cable or
anything like that I had to go wireless for the internet. Went to the local
electronics mall and spent a bit less than $100 and came away with a keyboard,
mouse, pair of speakers, a little wireless router thing and and a USB modem with
SIM card. I pay a little bit over $5 a month for data, uncapped, the speed and
service is lousy but adequate to stay in contact with family and friends and do
banking and keep the software on 2 computers up to date. (Linux)

I dunno how many of our phones over the last few years have been bought as
Find a pay-n-go phone with a big provider (Vodaphone, O2, whoever) and buy it
for £50, including £10 pre-pay credit. Throw away the sim (and the tenner), and
replace it with our cheapo-network sim. PROFIT!
Well, not profit, but at 8p a minute all networks on the cheapo sim, or 40p a
minute for all "foreign" networks on the provided sim, it's just not
worth the grief of trying to recover the tenner.
Cheers,
