This was predictable and predicted several years ago by tech
blogs whose hosts had libertarian or right-wing leanings.
Bear in mind though that the Chinese are not the only ones
with a long and devious history of spying; the British
(especially) and the Russians have their own sinister
reputations in the area. One would be tempted to discount
the Americans, whose reputation once was that for human
intelligence they can't keep a secret to save their souls,
but by all accounts they learned a lot from their cousins.
One recalls the CIA allowing the Russians to procure
industrial designs in the '60s through '80s ... which had
bugs left in. They knew it was working when captured
equipment had the exact same bugs.
Neither the CIA nor FBI nor MI6 have said anything of
substance on the issue of Chinese penetration. Such lack of
concern speaks volumes in its own way. I do not know what
the NSA is planning on that front, but I bet we haven't
heard the full story.
