Quote: "Google didn't have much of a presence at
the show
this
year, but Android (and Androids like this one at
Intel's booth)
"
LOL .... Just all those phones using it?!
Right?
What he is missing, amongst a lot of other things, is that
Google's entire strategy can be noiled down to 7 words:
"Get people
to use the Internet more."
Why is this so hard for people immersed
in MS's world to
'grok'?
Well I suppose we should count our
blessings ;-)

"Google. The company's invisibility in Barcelona" is exactly what they
want. Google are assumed, no-one even questions it. Just like in search. I
think this is exactly where they want to be.
' "Lumia" is the brand with name recognition, not "Windows
Phone." ' Well duh. No-one wants to be associated with "Windows
Phone", it's recognised as a failed experiment.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Otherwise he might not eat so well. He's only saying what a load of
other media have been reporting, MWC is fading to a sideshow, the
real developments in the mobile industry now happen so fast the
customers want them now, want them hot, and nobody can wait
for the once a year circus tent of MWC.
Android's perceived invisibility is what I'd expect. Since almost
everybody has it, it's no longer a marketing bonus. The hardware
vendors are forced to sell on hardware features. Comments below
the ars article hint too many makers are confusing the market
with stupid differentiating features, and it's about time Google
cracked down on some for not following UI guidelines, and
failing to supply timely Android updates. The makers just want
to shovel out phones, dumb, smart, what the heck, and Android
is just a handy industry standard OS that saves them some R&D.
The misconception that Google may have lost Android to
Samsung was covered in much of the press over the last couple
of weeks. There were also suggestions that HTC, LG and others
may be gathering like vultures to tear Android apart. Google may
be speaking quietly, let's hope they are also carrying a big stick.

The main thing I noticed is his complete inability to grasp the concept that
diversity is a good thing in FOSS. If Samsung want to slap on a different UI on
their Android phones, let them.
If it works well, it will be successful and will become the dominant standard.
If it doesn't work well, it will perish. There is no need for anyone to exert
tight control over "their" OS, in order to ensure "a quality
experience". That which works best, gets used.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
