I think you got the quote wrong. IIRC Gates said "You just

Gates never could tell the difference between marketing and
leveraging a monopoly.
His idea of marketing was getting an exclusive contract,
then turning the thumbscrews.
First thing we do, lets kill all the MBAs. (Apologies to
Shakespeare.) OK, so maybe we only ban them forever and make
them get a real job. In my lifetime, they have turned the US
from a manufacturing powerhouse to a nation of call centers.
Bah. Humbug!
Never forget that old saying: The best marketing is word of
mouth. Make a good product, and your need to market it
plummets. The flip side of that was explored in Vance
Packard's book "The Hidden Persuaders". Don't get sucked in
by marketing fluff.
