You don't need to trust Stallman. You can trust the community, though, to call
him out if he makes a claim (eg, "We don't spy on you.") that's not
true.
What you're trusting is the community, which is not trying to make a buck off
of you (trust me :-) ). Word gets out, and quickly.
I presume Bill Gates is trying to make money off of you, and so in this case his
agenda could conflict with your own... If you're comfortable with that, (as RMS
says) that's your choice.
Personally I'm not. I've quit Facebook, for example. In my Web browsing, I
prefer a browser and software that simply leaves me alone and stays out of
my life. I don't agree with a company that thinks it has a right to track my
life
in ways that I'm unaware of.
That said, I'm a Gmail user. Ostensibly one could make the claim that I'm
contradicting myself, but in that case I am willing to pay Google's price: They
scan my email, track my interests, and deliver ads, I get an otherwise spam-
free inbox.

I hope you are kidding.
Because if not, you must be a Microsoft
shill. Who else on planet earth would
come up with a question like that?
: )
Just in case you are not, the answer is
that Stallman doesn't lie. For starters.
He isn't trying to get rich from us. He
isn't empire building. He dedicated his
life work to protecting user rights and
freedom for code.
