There is no slippery slope. Either you respect people's
freedoms, or you don't. Canonical has been subject to a number
of controversial attempts to make a profit in a variety of
fashions. This isn't the first time.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Their open source bridge has been burning for some time now.
This is just additional fuel. May I suggest to cross that
bridge with extreme caution? Or better yet, avoid it
altogether and find another bridge.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

"The problem is that we *have* to trust them."
I think Fedora/RedHat/CentOS, Gentoo, Debian, and a whole host of others will
disagree with you there.
We don't need Canonical. Canonical needs us.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Why do I "have" to trust Ubuntu? There are literally hundreds of
Linux distros to choose from, the majority of which do not spy on users.
Ubuntu has long been touted as the "easy" crossover from Windows,
primarily because it hides things from the user and otherwise tends to act like
the closed playgound they're used to. But its not about teaching them Linux,
its about moving them from one controlled pen to another.
If you want to pretend its Windows, use Novell/Suse, if you want to pretend its
Linux, use Ubuntu.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
