Microsoft controls your hardware...
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, March 26 2013 @ 11:52 PM EDT
Yes!
Let's have Microsoft's boot lock on consumers' hardware deemed uncompetitive and
removed in Europe.

How Microsoft, a software provider, can assert control over hardware owned by
the buyer is beyond me.

All you have to do in the EC is to go to a store, and ask for a computer that will run Linux. If they sell it, and it then turns out that as a result of how the computer was built running Linux is impossible, then you can ask for your money back. Maybe manufacturers will learn if enough people do that.

On the other hand, you should be able to run Linux on any Macintosh without problems (Macs with Retina display possibly excluded until Linux supports it properly - might already be working). That would mean a computer that doesn't run Linux isn't anti-competitive, but just not competitive compared to a computer that does run it.

Rich ard Edwards, a principal analyst at research firm Ovum, said: "I can't see too many purchasers of Windows 8 calling foul over this.

"Microsoft will argue that the reason the technology has been developed is to provide enhanced security."
Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? Ovum are a typical M$ shill, like many so-called "researchers".

Wasn't there a Microsoft memo many years ago (showed up on Groklaw in the mid 2000's) where an upper level executive (possibly Gates himself) mused about using the boot process to lock Linux out of the PC market? Does anybody else remember the memo? Can anybody find it again?

I think that the one memo would go a long way to exposing UEFI as an anti-competitive move with potential security implications -- as opposed to the other way 'round.
