In case you were still wondering why we're seeing a deluge of crap patents,
here's an Ars Technica article on a relevant study: Study suggests patent
office lowered standards to cope with backlog
Capsule summary:
Rejected patent applications can be endlessly refiled as continuing applications
until the examiners grant them out of sheer overload (with a success rate near
90%); USPTO policy suddenly got worse in this regard in 2009. Suggested remedy
is to stop allowing refiled continuing applications after final
rejection.

Interesting choice of name.
For those not into computer gaming, SHODAN was the name of the big villain in
System Shock. She was quite legitimately creepy, and frequently shows up on
"Best Video Game Villains" lists.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

"Several
of the major manufacturers have talked to us about these patents, and they agree
with us. The product they sell is not infringing. It’s
putting the whole system
together. If you have an office scanner that scans with one button, is hooked up
to a network, and can send e-mail
—you infringe."
Well outside the
shores of the US our chosen vendor brought in a copier/scanner/printer and
connected it to our network, and set it up so we
could print to it from
anywhere, and scan documents and mail them one-click to addresses set up on the
machine. If I received one of those
lawyer's letters I would forward it to the
vendor, and sit back with popcorn.
Or are copy/scanners now like guns
and knives? Lawful to make and sell, just be careful how you use them

Looks like HP has pulled a game-changer out of its hat.
A highly modular, extremely low foot print, low consumption server platform
geared for Internet v.3, where every appliance, gadget, house and vehicle
supposedly will be connected for control, management and analysis*.
The Redmond dinosaur just got pushed further towards the brink.
*"control, management and analysis" happens to be the primary goals of
(military) intelligence. The total surveillance society is right around the
corner.
