On a less depressing note: When I worked in a commercial research lab, most of
the employees were women - including most of the low to middle management (I was
too lowly to see much of the upper management), and almost all of the technical
experts. Several of my colleagues went on maternity leave, and while most of
them never fully came back, some did and it didn't appear to dent their careers
at all.
I'm not trying to belittle what sounds like a pretty huge problem, just pointing
out that there are places where it doesn't happen. Fortunately, the
organisation didn't make things harder for men either - unless you count the
endless break-time conversations about something called Big Brother that left
the few male scientists out in the cold.
