The Google Maps Android application is not available through normal channels on
devices which have not made an agreement from Google. I have such a tablet. If
one installs CyanogenMod on such a device to get newer Android versions, one has
to find the Google applications of dubious legality to install to get Google
Maps, Google Play and some other Google branded apps. Potentially, if Play was
sideloaded, Maps is available in Play, but it requires sideloading Play, from
sources such as random file sharing sites.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

An exercise in reducing unwanted apps and services running in
the background caused me to download an app that showed me
what started when. Google Maps will autostart on my phone:
immediately After Startup;
when Any Application is installed/removed/updated;
when Power is Connected;
if Location Provider is changed;
if Any Widget is updated.
The object of the exercise was some other apps I have installed
because I want to use them when I want, I don't want them
autostarting on their own whim. It was quite an eyeopener to
see all the stuff chattering away to themselves behind my back
on a fairly standard commercial Android distro. I'm reasonably
sure they weren't chattering elsewhere because I'm a nutter who
keeps WiFi and Data service switched Off when I'm not using it.
