Are there power fluctuations that aren't voltage fluctuations?
A voltage fluctuation (in a pure resistor, like an
incandescent light bulb) produces a proportional fluctuation
in current. (We'll ignore things like temperature affecting
the resistance value and similar effects like melting the

It could also be a faulty light fitting ...
When our house was rewired, we had about 6 light fittings put in that used GU10
bulbs. One of those fittings must have burned through about ten bulbs before we
threw it out and replaced it. I think the other fittings are still on the
original bulbs! (The rewire was about 9 or 10 years ago, the light fitting was
replaced maybe 6 years ago.)

Light bulbs seem to made to break as quickly as possible these days - I've got
maybe 200 sockets in three buildings I 'manage' here and according to my
accounts I get through 50+ incandescent and 70+ fluorescent bulbs per year. I no
longer use fluorescent except for strip lights were there is no alternative. I
have tried every supplier possible and they only save electricity by me being in
the suppliers trying to get them exchanged which, even with a receipt seems
impossible as they are not marked clearly enough to prove the ones I have are
the ones the receipt is for!!
