According to the latest DVLA annual report, there were 36.5 million registered
cars in the UK last year. Even if only half of those were in use, a
"bill" of £460 million would average £25.21 per car-on-road per year.
That's about the amount of fuel duty levied on 43 litres of unleaded petrol.
It's also a bit less than two months' road tax for a 1.3l 4x4.
I've no idea about the accuracy of the article, but even if the headline figure
is right, why is it a headline? If it does triple by 2020, it'll still be small
change compared to the other costs of running a car.
