By the way, it's not new, but it was new to me, and I found this TED
talk exhilirating, about bacteria.
I just watched an old
recording from my cable channel on this exact topic. It was amazing what we have
learned so far. I'm just trying to keep up because my granddaughter has just
decided to switch from psychology to biology when she gets to college, and I'm
sending her there so I want here to get her money's worth!
Actually, I was asked to give a TED talk. But I told them I'd
probably pass out onstage from shyness, so I declined. That's part of why I
admire this talk, that she could even do it.
I know what you
mean. To get a research grant where I work you have to give a presentation. I
have so many ideas to offer but the thought of getting up there again is
intimidating.
I do need to get over that because beyond my normal research
projects I will need to be able to present my fledgling unification theory, and
all the supporting evidence for it even though it can't be proven directly.
Presenting such a paradigm shifting theory will undoubtedly lead to a
scientificly heated debate and will surely be a challenge. I'm not looking
forward to that but I can't give up for that reason.
And I
understood from the talk about quorums why when you are sick, not eating for a
bit works or why taking yogurt after antibiotics helps. I'd gladly spend the
rest of my time in life working on something like this, because the implications
for helping people are so mind-blowingly huge.
The talk I
heard was discussing how to turn the mechanism against the organism and let the
(in this case) plant's immune system clear out the evader. Done correctly there
will be no chance for a quick evolution to fix the signalling problems that
would now be working against the invader. Sounds great, but life always finds a
way.
