Just curious, but by giving him two extra dimes, did you expect him to give you
4 dimes in change, or a quarter, a dime, and a nickel? Either way, it seems
like a bit of an odd request to me. (Did you instead mean either it was $4.70
or that you wanted to give 3 dimes, making the change come out as two quarters?)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I have often experienced such clerks. The most recent, about 2 weeks ago, was
when I bought my groceries. I bought two items that were on sale at 78¢ below
regular price. The cashier ran them through at the regular price. I then went
to the customer service desk to get a refund (cashiers are not allowed to
correct their mistakes). For some reason that person insisted my refund was
66¢. She couldn't understand that if the difference on one item was 78¢ before
tax, there's no way the total difference could be only 66¢. On another
occasion, a clerk couldn't understand that when something is on sale, it
shouldn't cost more than regular, or the time I bought a CD, paid with a $20 and
walked out with more money than I went in with. I gave the clerk the chance to
correct her error, but she insisted it was correct, because the till said so. I
guess it never occurred to her that she might have made an error.
BTW, when I was in high school, I worked part time in a variety store. I would
often have the entire bill, including tax, calculated in my head, before the
till stopped. I also used to amaze my ex wife when we would do a buy a weeks
load of groceries and, when we got to the cashier, I'd already know the total,
tax included, within a couple of cents.
