The state of California needs to build enough desalination plants to produce 7
397 260 274 litres of water per day, to maintain present consumption. If
reliance on water from Colorado, Utah, and Nevada is to be decreased, then you
need to build at least 120 plants, rather than the 60 that would be required for
7 397 260 274 litres of water per day. To be fully self-sufficient, you'd need
360 such plants, scattered from San Diego, all the way up the coast to Eureka.
If the California state legislature were smart, they'd build a canal from Long
Beach to Mecca, via Corona, Banning and Palm Springs, building the desalination
plants at Salton City, and various points along the way.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Here in the Southern US, we are just getting to the point where our
consumption exceeds supply. There is a long running water fight among
Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
Some folks in the Georgia legislature are thinking about trying to claim
water from the Tennessee River, though it lies 50 miles outside Georgia
borders.
All this to feed the unrestrained growth that benefits no one except real
estate speculators and highway contractors. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
