The basic wiring for a detonator (used to be mercury fulminate -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury%28II%29_fulminate) was about 6 inches
long.
This just happened to be close to the wavelength of a number of CB radio
channels... And thus known to prematurely detonate when such radios were keyed.
For safety (as I recall) they were always stored in metal boxes (with locks),
and only removed just prior use, and even then were wrapped in aluminum foil
(though that might be misremembered).
Current detonators are much more stable, and much less likely to be triggered by
stray electromagnetic radiation. Even so, I don't believe they will do
demolition anywhere around a thunderstorm (ground currents can still play havoc
