Hey, I did that too. Actually I was trying to make a rocket, but it fizzled
(literally). A bit later I and a friend created a huge stink (again literally)
around the neighbourhood when we discovered that a sulfur + saltpetre mixture
burned spectacularly. This was in early 1970's in a certain African
city.
Pranks like this would be impossible for kids in my current location
(Finland) since fun chemicals are no longer sold over the counter in pharmacies.
But I am pretty sure a kid trying to pop a bottle in school would not be
expelled here. The punishments for schoolkids in current America seem totally
disproportionate, this isn't the first new of the kind I have seen.
Children
are by definition thoughtless, and punishments for misdeeds are needed, but the
future-ruining way it was done in this case was absolutely shocking. A couple of
hours of detention would have been much more fitting, and enough.
(One of the
articles quoted a school official saying something like kids needed a lesson.
Sure, by ensuring she gets no more lessons. Just how idiotic are these people?)
