I can't get past the pay wall for the article you posted,
but was just about
to create an comment about an article I
just read on ZDNet, with the following
summary below the
headline...
The smartphone making
division of Google is sent a formal
list of complaints by the EU for allegedly
abusing its
position in the market over recent patent litigation with
Apple.
I would insist it is the other way around, with
Apple
abusing its position in the market to attack Android. Last I
heard,
Apple had some $400 billion dollars they don't know
what to do with
anymore, accept to fund patent trolling
attacks on Android. Google/Motorola is
just trying to defend
itself. Why is it that we never get the full perspective
in
these articles? They always make Motorola out to be on the
attack, when all
Motorola is looking for is to be able to
neutralize these attacks by Apple and
Microsoft.
The article quotes EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin
Almunia as saying in prepared remarks...
The protection of
intellectual property is a
cornerstone of innovation and growth. But so is
competition.
I think that companies should spend their time innovating
and
competing on the merits of the products they offer — not
misusing their
intellectual property rights to hold up
competitors to the detriment of
innovation and consumer
choice."
Why doesn't he say that
to Apple??? Apple is the one who
insists on attacking Android everywhere in the
world. Apple
is the one who has abnigated their position as innovators
and
turned their resources to trolling instead.
Google/Motorola just want to be
left alone to innovate
exciting new products. They have never once attacked
anybody
- they just defend themselves from the trolls. What is wrong
with this
world when the good guy gets punished for
defending himself while the actions
of the bad guy are
ignored? [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Above I expressed consternation at the injustice of
attacking Google when
they are only defending themselves.
There are some very powerful forces at work
behind all
this. How else could the EU come out with such a
preposterous
position?
Now I understand. They are afraid of Google. They are
afraid
of the concept of Android and Open Source. It upsets
the natural order of
things. They have to take Google down,
and all our dreams along with it. They
will soon put the
world back in order, from their point of view. Google, and
Open Source along with it, will become a distant memory in a
few years
time. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

EC seems to think that Apple was willing to
license Motorola patents. If it's true
Motorola is in trouble, but I would like to
see some proof of that.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I hadn't realised that Apple had said it would pay an amount determined by the
courts. Shame it takes so long to sort this out, it can't be good. So at what
stage of the events and after how long did Apple say this?
EU press
release "Motorola Mobility sought an injunction against Apple in Germany
on the basis of a GPRS SEP and, after the injunction was granted, went on to
enforce it, even when Apple had declared that it would be willing to be bound by
a determination of the FRAND royalties by the German court."[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
