My favourite camera was a Konica TC - manual with automatic override. On several
occasions the battery died, and I just switched to manual and carried on
shooting. How many digital cameras could you do that with! :-) Indeed, how many
FILM cameras (post the 70s) could you do that with?
As an aside, I don't know whether the Nikon FM is still available (probably is),
but when Nikon were thinking of stopping making it, the professional
photographers kicked up a stink saying they wanted to be able to buy a camera
that was guaranteed to keep working. So Nikon kept it in production but the
price soared because the volume dropped.
A further aside, a couple of friends of mine (in the 90s) went on a missionary
stint to Africa (back where the wife had been born, actually). They took their
camera - with fresh batteries supposed to last months - and the heat wiped them
out in about a week. Ooops. So they came back with almost no pictures.
Cheers,
