It's been 20 years since I started using SCO Unix on i386 Machines, and a little
less that that using Linux. I still vividly telling the SCO sales rep to
shape-up or be overtaken by linux.
I remember the outrage when the whole saga began, and it's been a great and
wonderful experience.
Thanks, PJ! For all the hard work. And for the rest of you that have made GL
what it is, we press on!

Congratulations to PJ and all the others that make this
place a fascinating read. I don't often post here and seem
to have lost my login these days, but I do appreciate those
that do make the effort.
You have helped to bring together two worlds that did not
understand each other, both with their own arcane methods
and procedures.
If we understand each other that bit better and work
together, we can make this world a better place. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Happy Birthday to Groklaw. But more important - many, many congratulations,
PJ!
I came across Groklaw back in the early days of the SCO/IBM farago.
At the time I was a lowly code grunt in the depths of IBM, with an interest in
the case but no knowledge of anything that related to it. Groklaw filled that
void in the best possible way - with dispassion, intelligence, skill and
knowledge. I was hugely impressed by the quality and deep integrity of values of
the community under your guidance, and I've been here ever since. If there's
ever been anything like it elsewhere, I've never found it. I retired a couple of
years ago, but it's a personal testament to Groklaw that its RSS feed is still
on my Firefox bar, and that I check it multiple times a day. It's one of only
four, two of the other three being BBC news feeds; clearly I find Groklaw
that worthy of following.
Congratulations again. Well done - and
here's to many more! [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

A Happy Birthday greeting for PJ
A lady who has found a lot to say
And said it in a way that all of us
Are glad has caused some SCOful folk much fuss
A Happy Birthday greeting for PJ
She's gone about our business in a way
That helps us see through all the cant and spin
And proved the bad guys do not always win
A Happy Birthday greeting for PJ
We're glad you started Groklaw and will stay
To help us understand the fog of law
So we do not succumb to shock and awe
A Happy Birthday greeting for PJ
We'll celebrate this special day in May
Then knuckle down to start the next ten years
With you around to help fend off our fears!!!
With many many thanks for one of the true jewels of the Internet!
Jeff

Groklaw has been one of the most interesting and informative web sites I've had
the privilege of visiting. I wasn't here at the very beginning, so it's nine
years and change for me, but I think this web site has touched a lot of people
and changed a lot of viewpoints.
I don't think the internet would be the same if this web site hadn't happened
along. Thank you, PJ, for making the world a better place through your writing
and analysis.

PJ asked:
Somebody needs to explain to the judges what
software is and what it is not. I see from the dissents in CLS Bank that some
judges are a teensy bit confused, so someone should lend them a hand.
If not
us, who?
Answer:
"On the fields of
Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh,
when no living creature can speak
falsely or fail to answer, a question will be asked.
A question that must never
be answered: Doctor Who ?"
In all seriousness though thank
you PJ et al for all the hard work.
I've left a lot of forums all of them
plagued with spam posts but you somehow managed to keep GL clean and pleasant,
worth every visit.
Thank you for the freedom, for the permission to post as

Happy Birthday Groklaw, PJ and everybody!
Had anybody told me a decade ago that i would spend time daily for 10 years on a
legal blog, eagerly awaiting every new posting, i guess i would have been
sitting on his head and screaming for help and an ambulance to the mental
hospital...
PJ and everyone else: thanks for opening the door to the legal world for me, and
for shining some light over the dust, the piles of documents etc. and show that
at least some of it makes sense.
My only complaint: i am extremely sorry that i have not been able to contibute
more. My deepest apologies.
I think i'll make myself a Rum grog, and drink to the next 10 years. Arrr![ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Happy Birthday PJ. Thanks for allowing so many of us to
contribute anonymously over the years. There have been many
times in my past, as I'm sure there have been in others'
pasts, where I wished to contribute but could not have my name
seen, especially when my thoughts might be in conflict with
those of my employer(s). You've shown us a great deal of

Years ago in Europe we were nearly going under through the
onslaught of dictators and their collaborators. Only through
the persistence of a few good people we evaded falling into
the abyss.
I cannot help but see what PJ and all of the good people is
doing here as a similar feat - only in modern times. Large
enterprises and their collaborators are constantly attacking
basic freedom rights. Not for power pr. se., but worse: out
of pure greed.
If it wasn't for PJ and all your folks the world would be a
much worse place.
Congrats![ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Before I was introduced to FreeBSD (my first experience with open source) I had
no concept of copyright law, trademark law or patent law. Because I had no
concept of them, I had no moral compass in regards to them either.
I simply believed that people shouldn't have to sell their souls in order to
obtain the tools necessary to be productive in life (or even to be entertained).
The whole concept of a community of people, coming together to provide for
themselves those tools and then give those tools away for free totally blew my
mind.
When the SCOs extortion racket began to publicly threaten the existance of
Linux, I found Groklaw to be an invaluable resource. It is because of websites
like this, that I have learned to understand these laws (to the extent I have
learned them anyway). It is through Groklaw that I have learned to appreciate
these laws for what they are intended to do, and even learned how these laws can
be (and are) abused for the purpose of extortion and anti-competitive behavior.
Most importantly though, it is though this website that I have learned to
appreciate open source, not just for the free software (as in gift), but for the
freedom that open source software brings it it's users. It is because of that
understanding that I contribute more now to open source projects than I have
EVER spent on proprietary software.
Thank you, PJ and all, for keeping this light lit (even for the slower people
like me). I think, quite literally, that Groklaw has become a proverbial city
on a hill that cannot be hidden.
Happy 10th Birthday! I look forward to many, many more! :))

I've learned a lot about technology and civil law.
Thanks for the education. It has not been wasted.

10 years? What? Where'd they go?
A whole decade. PJ, you have not done well,
you have done FANTASTICALLY
well!
I started reading Groklaw shortly
after you first started. It was with a mixture
of horror, hilarity,
incredulity, and surprise I read about the claims,
allegations, antics,
sophistry, smears and what I thought was the sheer
mendacity of SCO. It made
compulsive reading. It was better than any soap
opera!
And it has
obviously had some rewards. Look at how much you learned
about blogging!
Thank you P.J. Groklaw is still a favourite stop on the Information
Super
Highway, and will remain so for quite a while yet. Wishing you more
power
for your keyboard...
I remain yours sincerely,
Anon Y.
