This is NASA spending our money.

But WILL the population reach 12 billion?

Bear in mind that about 1980, the absolute unbeleivable MINIMUM expected
population for the millenium was 8 billion. 13 years beyond it we're still not
there.

Current predictions are for a population collapse, 3 billion in 2150. But seeing
as we are still dramatically UNDERshooting predictions, that collapse could
happen a lot sooner ... the European population is already shrinking fast, China
is shrinking, India is about to enter negative growth, etc etc etc.

Oh well, we'll see (or not - us personally probably won't be here). But the rate
of population growth is extremely close to going negative.

Cheers,
Wol

That was my first reaction too, but then I considered - If NASA is willing to invest in this there must be some rational beyond what the reporter picked up on. I can think of one...

For example, to simulate foods from stock ingredients like proteins and fibre into something that has texture like the real thing, like meat.

Otherwise, I can't see much point in printing biscuits with pretty designs, and somehow save the world from famine doing that. It has to be a case of a reporter who has missed the point, as they often do with Science news for some reason.

read ... space travel ... if you take basic ingredients - including recycled
sewage - and construct the food you can produce nutritious and appetising food
through a long voyage, simulating food sensations. Of course the fundamental IP
is described in Douglas Adams' books and is owned by the nutramatic division of
Sirius Cybernetics Corp, which, through the use of time travel and Galactic
Patent law, retain perpetual ownership.

A much better source...

from the LA Times...

"The way we are working on it is, all the carbs, proteins and macro and micro nutrients are in powder form," ... "We take moisture out, and in that form it will last maybe 30 years."

Those powders could be made out of any number of materials, ... substances that can be used to create edible meals. Some of these materials include algae, duckweed, grass, lupine seeds, beet leaves and insects.

Pizza will be one of the first items printed because of its natural layers of ingredients. First, a layer of dough will be printed and baked at the same time using a heated plate at the bottom of the printer. A layer of tomato base will follow -- made of powder, water and oil -- then a protein layer will top the pizza.

organ replacements.

At least the necessary supporting tissues.

Right now, those are created by removing cells from the structure.

Then, before use, they are infused with the target cells that take over the
functioning of the organ.
