No. people should not pay taxes plural. There should be one tax
for all seasons, no more income, VA, inheritance, excise, whatever tax.
Money is provided by governments as a means for citizens to
conduct their business. Whenever money changes hands a tax should
be paid. Simple, easy to understand, one uniform rate, almost unavoidable.
No government will ever agree to do this because it will put thousands
of civil servants out of a job, and no two governments will ever agree
on a rate that is equitable across their diverse economies.

Wow, I haven't had as good a laugh from a proposal in ages. If you wish a
permanent underclass you couldn't do better than implement this. There's a
reason the wealthy can game the tax code and play one nation against another,
just as corporations do. Do you think politicians cannot be bought? It's easy
and cheaper than you may realize. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Corporations are always wanting to be treated as people (in the US they appear
to have much more influence on the outcome of elections than real people), so
why not treat them as such:
1. Scrap the corporation tax on /profits/
2. Tax them on *income* at the same rate as people.
3. Make them pay sales tax on their purchases.
As their income is high, they'll end up in the highest tax band (which is much
higher than corporation tax) and pay much more to the government (as the tax is
on a higher base as well).
Paying the sales tax will also put money into the government coffers.
