When it tried to eliminate the command line I started looking at other
alternatives. Unix wasn't readily available on a PC, but Minix was never meant
to be a working system. After dual booting MS-DOS and Minix on my NCR PC4
(IBM-XT compatible) for a while, I found Soft Landing System's Linux package. It
had kernel 0.99pl12, but was both quick and rock solid. I haven't looked back,
although I did have to switch to Slackware when SLS folded their tent.
The best part? In 1989 I wrote several communications tasks for ISC Unix so it
could work with some cash registers and credit card terminals. Those tasks were
later compiled and run on a Spark station as well. That code still compiles and
runs correctly on Slackware 14.0. Try that with Microsoft's platform du jour.
